Who Is Abby Cooper?
Abby is a thirty-something professional psychic, a “P.I.” in her own words: a psychic intuitive. She works from Royal Oak, Michigan, a Detroit suburb, with a calendar booked months ahead and every reading taped. She is funny, a bit awkward and very sure of what her intuition tells her, even when she cannot explain it.
The detective is Dutch Rivers, handsome and convinced she is a fraud. His doubt and her certainty drive the book. Her free-spending sister Cat adds comedy, and so does her dog, Eggy.
What Is the Psychic Eye Mystery Series About?
Each mystery in the series follows Abby as she uses her gift to solve murders. Here she has to clear her own name and find the killer. Her intuition points the way, but she still has to do the legwork. Over the series the setting moves to Austin, Texas, Dutch joins the FBI, and Abby becomes a psychic consultant on federal cases.
The themes stay the same: belief against skepticism, the working life of a psychic, family and friendship. Later Abby gains a best friend and business partner, Candice Fusco. Publishers Weekly called book 12 “far from cozy”, so the series grows darker as it goes.
Our Review: A Fun Cozy Mystery, a Little Thin
This is a light, quick paranormal mystery, and its best feature is the inside view of a psychic’s working day. Laurie worked as a professional psychic herself, and the readings, the clients and the toll of the job feel real. The humor comes from Abby’s voice, which is chatty and self-deprecating.
We found no trade review of this mystery novel. Book bloggers liked the psychic-sleuth hook and the red herrings. Several found the romance with Dutch the weak point, and one found Abby a little bland. Publishers Weekly made the same point about the couple years later, while praising the friendship stories. If you want sparkle and a quick read, this works; if you want a deep puzzle, it is light.

Who Is Victoria Laurie, the Author?
Victoria Laurie is a professional psychic, and her mysteries have reached the bestseller lists. She drew on that career to create both Abby and M. J. Holliday, the ghostbusting medium of her Ghost Hunter Mysteries, which begin with What’s a Ghoul to Do?. She still offers psychic sessions and co-hosts a podcast about the series.
