Police constable Hamish Macbeth would rather lose a promotion than leave his quiet life in the north of Scotland. He is the hero of M.C. Beaton’s Highland mysteries, and his first case appeared in 1985. There are 38 novels so far. The newest, Death of a Groom, was published in February 2026, and Death of a High-Flyer is due in February 2027.

Many readers know Hamish from the BBC show with Robert Carlyle, which ran for three series in the 1990s. The books were there first, and they go much further. Below is the full reading order, the TV facts and where to begin.

How Many Hamish Macbeth Books Are There?

There are 38 Hamish Macbeth novels as of November 2026. Thirty-three appeared in her lifetime, from 1985 to 2018, and five have followed with Green since 2022. Some lists, Goodreads among them, number the later books one higher, because they count the Christmas novella. We follow the official numbering.

Do You Need to Read the Hamish Macbeth Mysteries in Order?

No, each case is complete in itself, so you can pick up any book and follow the plot. In our view, though, reading in order pays off. Hamish’s love life and his rank keep changing across the series, and the official blurbs show it.

  • In the first book he works the case with the help of Priscilla Halburton-Smythe, and their on-again, off-again romance runs through the early novels.
  • In Death of a Travelling Man he has been promoted to sergeant, much to his horror. The promotion does not last.
  • By Death of a Valentine he is a sergeant again, with a junior officer of his own.
  • In book 29 the threat of closing his station hangs over him.

Read out of order, and you will keep meeting the results of these changes before the books that cause them.

Who Is Hamish Macbeth? The Village Policeman of Lochdubh

Hamish Macbeth keeps the peace in the village of Lochdubh, a fictional place in Sutherland, in the Scottish Highlands. The name is Gaelic for “black loch” and is pronounced Lokh-DOO. Police headquarters are in Strathbane, which is also invented. The idea came to the author during a week at a fly-fishing school in Lochinver.

Hamish is tall, thin and red-haired, and he has a reputation for laziness. He is the eldest of seven children and sends most of his pay to his crofter parents. Much of the charm lies in the regular cast:

  • Priscilla Halburton-Smythe – the daughter of a wealthy local landowner, Colonel Halburton-Smythe, who cannot stand Hamish.
  • DCI Blair – his superior in Strathbane, a heavy whisky drinker and his archenemy, who would love to see the local station closed.
  • Elspeth Grant – a news reporter and sometime love interest, whose Traveller heritage gives her insights Hamish trusts.
  • Dick Fraser – his dutiful but lazy junior officer in the later books, known to sleep in a deck chair in the front garden.
  • The animals – first the dog Towser, later the dog Lugs and Sonsie, a “domesticated” wildcat.

Who Writes the Hamish Macbeth Series by M.C. Beaton Now?

R.W. Green writes the new novels. M.C. Beaton was the pen name of Marion Chesney, who was born in Glasgow in 1936. After her death in 2019, her long-time friend Rod Green carried on her work. He is the husband of her former UK editor and had written more than 70 books of his own. She offered him the job herself when her health was failing.

The first books with his name were begun together with her and finished after she died. Since 2022 every new Hamish book has the shared credit. Her life story is told in full on the M.C. Beaton author page.

M.C. Beaton Books in Order: Agatha Raisin, Historical Romances and Edwardian Murder Mysteries

Hamish is only half of her crime writing. Her other sleuth arrived in 1992: a retired London PR executive who moves to the Cotswolds village of Carsely. That series now has 37 novels. Before the mysteries, she wrote 99 romance novels, many of them Regency stories, most under her real name. Four Edwardian mysteries with Lady Rose Summer followed. All of Agatha’s cases are on our Agatha series page.

The Newest Hamish Macbeth Mystery: Death of a Groom and Death of a High-Flyer

The newest book is Death of a Groom, number 38, published in February 2026 in the UK and the US. The next one, Death of a High-Flyer, is due from Grand Central on 9 February 2027 in the US. Sergeant Hamish Macbeth, with Claire by his side, looks into the shooting of businessman Kieron O’Brien, who was photographing nesting white-tailed eagles. The book is not yet on the official list, so the number 39 is our own count.

On Screen: How Many Seasons Are There of Hamish Macbeth?

The BBC’s Hamish Macbeth TV series had three series (seasons) and 20 episodes. It ran on BBC One from 26 March 1995 to 4 May 1997. The three series had six, six and eight episodes of about 50 minutes, and the last one ends with a two-part finale. Robert Carlyle played Hamish. BBC Scotland made the show with Zenith Entertainment, and Daniel Boyle devised it and wrote 12 of the episodes.

It was filmed in Plockton, Kyle of Lochalsh and the country around them. Shirley Henderson played the reporter Isobel Sutherland, Ralph Riach was “TV John” McIver, and Hamish had a terrier called Wee Jock.

How the TV Show Differs From the Books

Very little of the novels made it to the screen. TV Lochdubh sits on the west coast, while the books put it in Sutherland, and none of the supporting characters carried over. The show played down the mystery in favour of quirky comedy, and its Hamish smokes cannabis. The author disliked it: she had written a six-foot, laid-back Highlander, she said, and got a shorter Glaswegian with a chip on his shoulder. She worked the experience into book 14, Death of a Scriptwriter.

Where to Watch the Series

In the UK, the whole series has been available on BBC iPlayer since September 2023. A reboot “faithful to the novels” has been in development at Free@Last TV, the company behind the Agatha show. No broadcaster, cast or date is known yet.

Where to Start: Death of a Gossip, Book 1 of the Series

Begin with book one, published by St. Martin’s Press in New York in 1985. The first edition ran to 166 pages, so it is a quick way to meet Hamish and Priscilla before the cast grows. Our Death of a Gossip review tells you what to expect, without spoilers.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hamish Macbeth

Is Hamish Macbeth a cozy mystery?

Yes, in the way most readers use the word: the books are cozy, with a remote Scottish setting and a recurring cast. The author herself disliked the cosy label, and pointed out that nobody calls Agatha Christie cosy.

Does Hamish Macbeth ever marry?

Not so far. As of book 38 he is still single. Priscilla is his great might-have-been, and later books bring other loves, among them Claire, a paramedic.

Are the US and UK titles different?

A few do. Book 8, Death of a Glutton, is Death of a Greedy Woman in the US, and book 9 is spelled Traveling there. Book 26 is called Death of a Sweep in the UK.

Are the Amish Inn Mysteries part of this series?

No: the Amish Inn Mysteries are a separate multi-author cozy series published by Annie’s, which opens with Rachael Phillips’s Secrets of the Amish Diary.
