A Thanksgiving stuffing contest, a rival who stole your husband and a body in a dumpster. That is the menu in The Diva Runs Out of Thyme, the first book in the Domestic Diva Mysteries by Krista Davis. It came out in 2008 and was nominated for the Agatha Award for Best First Novel. Eighteen years and eighteen sequels later, it is still the place to start.
What Is The Diva Runs Out of Thyme About?
Few can compete with local celebrity Natasha Smith when it comes to entertaining. Sophie Winston, an event planner in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, is determined to try. Natasha may have stolen the spotlight, and Sophie’s husband too. This Thanksgiving, Sophie is determined to win the prize at the Stupendous Stuffing Shakedown.
Then Sophie’s search for the perfect turkey takes a basting. She stumbles across a corpse: the body in the dumpster behind the store. The dead man is a private investigator, and the police find Sophie’s name and photo inside his car. Soon there is another dead body, and someone seems happy to pin both murders on Sophie.
The publisher’s blurb sums up the stakes: she has to solve the murder, or she’ll be serving up prison grub instead of turkey.
Meet the Main Characters of the Domestic Diva Series
Sophie is a practical, funny heroine in her forties, rebuilding her life after the divorce. Natasha is the rival domestic diva. She was Sophie’s childhood rival, and now she lives with Mars, Sophie’s ex-husband. Natasha has a TV show and an opinion on every napkin fold.
The cast of characters is where this cozy series shines:
- Nina, Sophie’s best friend from across the street, always ready for snooping.
- Bernie, a loyal friend who is always around when things go wrong.
- Hannah, Sophie’s sister, and Inga, their mother, who sides with Natasha on the Thanksgiving menu.
- Humphrey, a mortician with a crush on Sophie, who she can’t quite turn down.
- Detective Wolf Fleishman, a police detective with a mysterious past.
The scenes between Sophie and Wolf are low-key, but they plant a slow burn that runs through the whole series.
Our Review: A Cozy Mystery Book Served With Stuffing
What we loved most is the dueling tips. Each chapter opens with a hosting tip from Sophie and a counter-tip from Natasha. Sophie’s advice is sensible. Natasha’s is absurdly grand. It is a small joke, and it never gets old.
The food is the other star. Cooking and baking run through the plot, and the book ends with recipes and entertaining tips. This is a culinary cozy that makes you hungry. Next to the kitchen scenes, the mystery holds up too. Davis scatters enough red herrings to keep you guessing until the last chapters.
The quirky characters carry the book. Nosy neighbors, a mortician suitor and a smug rival give Old Town a real sense of community. The family scenes are lively, even when they sting.
A few things may bother you. Inga can be harsh, and some family scenes feel more stressful than cozy. The large cast takes a while to sort out. Some readers find the ending abrupt. If you want a tight police procedural, this is not it. As mystery fiction goes, this is comfort food: warm, funny and light on gore.
On Goodreads the book holds 3.90 out of 5 from more than 9,000 ratings and over 1,000 reviews.

Who Is the Author of The Diva Runs Out of Thyme?
Krista Davis is a New York Times bestselling cozy mystery author from Virginia. She once lived in Old Town Alexandria, which is why the book is set in Old Town with such an insider’s eye. Today she lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia with her dogs and cats.
Are there other books by Krista Davis? Yes, two more series. The Paws & Claws Mystery series is set in Wagtail, a pet-friendly Virginia town. The Pen & Ink Mysteries follow Florrie Fox, a bookstore manager who draws coloring books. If you like pets, the Paws & Claws series is the natural next step.
Who Should Read It? A Great Pick for a Book Club
Read it if you like holiday settings, kitchen chaos and a heroine who wins by being competent. It also works well for a reading group in November. The Thanksgiving theme, the recipes and Sophie’s feud with domestic diva Natasha give everyone something to talk about.
