Cairo, 1998. Makana fled Khartoum seven years earlier, and he now lives on a rickety houseboat on the Nile. The ex-police inspector from Sudan works as a private detective in the city.
Then Saad Hanafi calls. He is a wealthy business man with a bad reputation, and he owns a football team. His star player, Adil Romario, has gone missing, and Hanafi wants him found.
The missing football player case soon leads somewhere else. A British woman, Liz Markham, is still searching for her four year old daughter, Alice, who disappeared in Cairo in 1981. The two cases cross. Soon the detective is encountering Muslim extremists, Russian gangsters and a powerful man’s secrets, in a city shaped by the rise of Islamic extremism. The publisher’s blurb also promises an old enemy from his past.

Is It a Cozy Mystery?
No. It is crime fiction layered with politics: a noir thriller, not a cozy. The hero is attacked more than once, and reviewers found the Cairo of the book frightening and threatening. The story takes in corruption, wealth and poverty, and a child abduction.

Who Is Parker Bilal?
Parker Bilal is the pen name of the novelist Jamal Mahjoub. He was born in London in 1960 to a mother from England and a father from Khartoum, and he was brought up in Khartoum. Under his own name, he writes literary fiction, including Navigation of a Rainmaker and Travelling with Djinns.
Like his author, the detective lives between cultures: an exile in Egypt.
